Donor Car
We begin with a donor car. At this point, there are two choices: bring us your own car or we can source one for you. We start with what is important to you: body style, color (interior and exterior), transmission, mileage preference, and budget. Depending on the level of services desired, we may either chose to procure the best possible example needing the least amount of work, or we may chose, in the case of a full OEM+ Individual project, to acquire the cheapest car we can find without accident history or chassis damage. Once receiving the car, we spend several days driving, inspecting, and evaluating the vehicle, during which we complete a 100 point analysis of the vehicle’s condition and status. This document then becomes the checklist for all future conversations and involves both mechanical and cosmetic evaluations. Once we get a baseline, we can discuss with the customer which level of restoration and how much if any maintenance items are to be completed.
Creative Design
Once the evaluation process is complete, it is time to chose between restoration programs. Basic Refresh and OEM+ Restoration are both straight forward efforts to renew the design decisions that have already been made by the factory. The vehicle owner will make decisions based on what level of detail is required and how far to take the detail. It is once we reach the OEM+ Individual program that full customization begins.
To start, the customer will share inspiration pictures of cars (both BMW and other makes), architecture, shoes, watches, fashion, and anything that inspires them. Clutch Designs professionals will then work on integrating those items into design mock ups and will present visuals and material samples to communicate ideas. The collaboration can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months and all details are on the table from the paint color, to the leather color/texture/stitching design, trim material, brake caliper colors, lighting design, and even seat belt material.
The Build
Everything comes together once the design stage is complete. The build process will take several months and will depend on the level of customization specified and lead times of custom components. Many facets of construction will occur simultaneously, however fine craftsmanship items such as leather upholstery, lighting implementation, and body should not be rushed in order to achieve the optimal end result. Clutch Designs employs relationships with several specialty partners to make sure every piece of your vehicle is assembled by experts. Throughout the build, we will document every part supplied and repair made in great detail and offer milestone in person visits to inspect the car if desired. Periodic virtual updates will include pictures and videos to satisfy the anticipation. At the end of the process, each vehicle will be presented with full documentation of the build in the form of a coffee table book, a Clutch Designs as-built window sticker, parts book, and a custom gift to match the uniqueness of your automobile.
Optional Add Ons
The final product of your custom vehicle is a work of art and as such, you may want to commemorate your purchase. We offer several ways to do so including a professional movie trailer video, 1/8 scale model cars, custom shoes/jackets/other apparel to match your car, and artwork.
